Furia Hosts Pa Auditor General Candidate Joe Peters for Fundraiser

Philadelphia (August, 2004) -- Richard F. Furia, Esquire and his wife, Bernadette, hosted Joe Peters, Pennsylvania candidate for Auditor General, at their home in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, August 3, 2004.

Joe Peters was introduced by his host, Richard F. Furia, Esquire.

“My journey from a street cop, to state prosecutor, to White House official has provided the needed experience to be the people’s top watchdog in safeguarding against corruption in our state government,” said Peters. “That experience will make me a ‘different kind’ of Auditor General in guarding the tax dollars of the citizens of Pennsylvania.”

Peters rose from being a Scranton police officer to a senior level state and federal prosecutor, where he was a leader in convicting drug dealers and bringing down organized crime figures including Philadelphia Mob Boss “Little Nicky” Scarfo and 16 of his associates. He was then recruited by Four-Star General Barry McCaffrey to serve in his Drug Czar’s Office at the White House and later served as liaison to the Office of Homeland Security led by Secretary and former Pennsylvania Governor, Tom Ridge, in fighting the terrorists’ efforts to use drug profits to finance attacks on America.

“From facing down the Philadelphia mafia to convicting drug traffickers, I will not back down when it comes to stopping fraud, waste and abuse,” commented Peters. “I must say,” he commented, “I am proud of my Italian-American ancestry and I don’t regret a single day of ridding our streets of those few criminals who perpetuate the negative stereotype of Italians in the United States.”

Peters stepped down from his White House post to seek election as Pennsylvania's next Auditor General. The Pennsylvania Auditor General is the state's chief fiscal watchdog, responsible for uncovering waste fraud and abuse in the spending of state tax dollars. Peters is the only candidate in the race for Auditor General with experience investigating financial wrongdoing. As a Republican, he also is the only candidate who will be truly independent of the Governor, whose spending he will be auditing.

Peters touts the importance of having a truly “independent” watchdog since the Auditor General’s job is to ensure the state’s tax dollars are being spent efficiently and effectively in all state government agencies including the state’s education dollars in all 501 public school districts.

“Whether it’s making sure our school districts are fiscally solvent, or watching the pensions of cops and firefighters and nurses, I’ll watch out for the people of Pennsylvania.” Peters said.

A graduate of King’s College and West Scranton High School, Joe Peters earned his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle. His son Max is a high school student in the Harrisburg area. Joe’s father, Gene Peters, was a two-term Republican mayor of Scranton. Joe currently splits his time between Harrisburg and his home in Northeast Pennsylvania.
